Former UFC heavyweight champion, Francis Ngannou, is heading to hospital after a devastating loss to Anthony Joshua last weekend in Saudi Arabia.
Joshua shocked Ngannou with a vicious right hand in the opening round before brutally knocking him twice in the next, the second of which would leave Ngannou flat on the canvas, unable to recover to end the match.
While Joshua awaits the winner between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk’s clash for the undisputed heavyweight championship fight, Ngannou says he’s heading to hospital “just in case”.
“I was quite surprised that I remember everything from that fight night and coming back to the locker room”, said the 37-year-old Cameroonian fighter. “Basically, I was conscious right after and since then everything has been good, although I still need to run some medical work just in case.
“I feel healthy but for the sport’s longevity, we better check and find out if there’s anything that could be done to get better now. I still need more checkups.”
Ngannou went home with a prize of $20 million to Joshua’s $50 million.
But even Joshua had kind words for his ring adversary, praising him, “He’s an inspiration, a great champion, and this shouldn’t take away from his capabilities.
“He can come again. I told him he shouldn’t leave boxing. He’s two fights in, and he’s fought the best”.
Admonishing him, Joshua said, “He can go a long way if he stays dedicated.”
