The Nigerian Federal Government has declared Monday, January 8, 2024, as the commencement date for the Nigerian travelers passport automated application system.
This innovation should allow Nigerians to conveniently complete their passport application processes online, eliminating the human interface at the passport offices in the country and all the inefficiencies, chaos and corruption usually associated with obtaining a Nigerian passport.
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on Monday inspected the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) facilities in the company of its Comptroller-General, Wura-Ola Adepoju. Tunji-Ojo, afterwards, told the press the platform is nearing completion and currently at about 99% readiness. He promised eligible applicants of Nigerian passports either for renewal or fresh issuance henceforth a “sweet experience”.
“We are starting the training and on January 8, the solution will be live and direct for Nigerians,” Tunji-Ojo said.
“We have been able to reduce human contact in passport acquisition to the minimum,” the minister said, adding that “the new initiative will enhance the security architecture of the country as well as the comfort and convenience of Nigerians.”
He linked the initiative to the government’s commitment to advancing President Bola Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” agenda.
The online application procedures include providing all the necessary details of the applicant and uploading passport pictures and other necessary supporting documents for review.
Nevertheless, successful applicants will be required to visit the passport office for applicant’s biometric data acquisition and collection of the passport.
