One firefighter died and at least 40 shops were completely razed In a tragic inferno early Wednesday at Coal Camp market, a popular Enugu State motor spare parts market.
The fire originated from a spare parts shop and quickly spread to a neighboring fast food joint. Reports say the intensity of the flames escalated when a gas cylinder in the fast food joint exploded, engulfing more than 40 shops in its destructive path.
The security personnel on the scene could not quickly access the shop where the fire originated due to burglary proofing.
Mike Nome, the President of the Coal Camp Spare Parts Market Association, confirmed the incident decrying the loss of businesses and “goods worth hundreds of millions of Naira”.
“We are appealing to the government and good spirited individuals to come to our rescue.”
Furthermore, one of the brave firefighters unfortunately was caught in the thick smoke, was successfully pulled out and rushed to the Enugu State University Teaching Hospital, Parklane, but did not survive.
Engr Okwudili Ohaa, the Director of Enugu State Fire Service, expressed deep sadness and said the loss of their colleague was a tragedy for the firefighter’s community.
Incidences of fire outbreaks have become all too familiar in Nigeria, yet governments and market managers have roundly failed to deploy anti-fire plans and fire fighting services around the markets for more rapid response.
