Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has claimed the Jewish people have a historical right to all the land of Palestine, but are willing to live with the Arabs in peace and security.
Netanyahu said it became necessary to correct the erroneous narrative that the Jews were settlers in their land starting from 1947.
“About 2000 years ago, we were conquered by the Byzantines, but contrary to narratives, we were never exiled from our land. The loss of our land occurred when the Arab conquest took place in the 7th century. The Arabs unlike other empires before then, started taking over Jewish farmlands and gradually over two centuries, the Jews became a minority in their land”.
“The Arabs were colonials, Jews the dispossessed natives but we never disappeared and never gave up our dreams and rights to return to our ancestral land”, he said.
Netanyahu argued that the Arab settlers left the land “barren and empty” and never developed or made it their own until the Jews returned to “build factories and places of unemployment, then Arabs from neighbouring countries started emigrating to Israel and now called themselves Palestinians and reconstructed history to say ‘we’ve been here for centuries, you have no right to be here’”.
The PM put the Jewish position simply, “Palestinians can live here, the Jews can live here, but this is a Jewish land”.
He said the whole basis of the conflict is that Palestinians representing the Arab conquerors say we “don’t have a right to a Jewish State. Well we do”.
The Israeli-Arab conflict has been raging throughout the 20th century since the establishment of the modern State of Israel in 1947.
From the wars in 1948, 1967 and 1973 and other low-scale conflicts with Lebanon, Syria and Palestinian militant forces, Israeli chequered modern history has been marked by hostilities with neighbors.
Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) are currently amassed on the border of Gaza in preparation to invade northern Gaza with a stated objective to “wipe out Hamas” after it launched unprovoked rocket attacks on Israel last weekend killing at least a thousand persons.
