In a recent incident in Ondo State, Nigeria, gunmen have abducted 25 members of the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC).
The incident occurred about 3.00pm Friday along the Akure to Ose road as members of the church were traveling in their now abandoned vehicle for a religious event.
The armed assailants reportedly stopped the vehicle and whisked the worshippers away, taking them hostage to an unknown destination.
The motive behind the kidnapping is not yet clear, and no group has claimed responsibility for the abduction or made any contact with the families of the victims at the time of this report.
Ondo State police spokeswoman, Funmi Odunlami confirmed the incident did occur but promised a robust response by security authorities to locate and rescue the kidnapped individuals.
“Yesterday afternoon, the police was informed that a church bus with the Inscription CAC was abandoned around Elegbeka area. There are suspicions that the passengers in the vehicle were kidnapped and the Police Anti kidnapping squad and other tactical teams have been deployed to the area to rescue the victims and arrest all involved in the crime”, she said.
This kidnapping incident adds to the growing security concerns in Nigeria, where incidents of abduction for ransom have become alarmingly frequent. The job of President Bola Tinubu, who promised before his election to end the scourge of insecurity in Nigeria is clearly cut out for him.
