Geffrey Hinton, one of the godfathers of Artificial Intelligence has urged governments of the world to step in and make sure the machines do not take control of society like in Will Smith’s i-Robot movie.

Hinton made headlines in May when he announced he was quitting Google after a decade of work there to speak more freely on the dangers of AI shortly after ChatGPT captured the imagination of the world.

The highly respected AI scientist based at the University of Toronto, Canada, was speaking to a packed audience at Collision Tech Conference in the Canadian city.

The conference brought together more than 30,000 startup founders, investors and tech workers mostly looking to learn how to ride the AI wave, and not to learn the lessons of its dangers.

Geffrey Hinton, one of the pioneer scientists on Artificial Intelligence speaks at the Collision Techn Conference, Toronto, Canada on the dangers of the technology.

I think progress in Artificial Intelligence is inevitable and probably good but we seriously ought to worry about mitigating all the bad side effects of it and worry about the existential threat“, says Hinton.

We have to take seriously the possibility that AI machines can get to be smarter than us – which seems quite likely, and they may develop goals of their own – which seems quite likely. If they do, they may well develop the goal of taking control. If that happens, we’re in trouble”.

If we use them for making battle robots it’s going to be a very risky and scary stuff. Even if they’re not super intelligent and don’t have their intentions but just do what Putin tells them to do, it’s going to make it much easier for rich countries to invade poor countries.

At present, there’s a barrier to invading poor countries which are getting dead citizens coming home. If it s just dead battle robots, that’s great and the military-industrial complex will love that”.

Hinton analysed the impact of robots on jobs in the future predicting, “The jobs that are going to survive AI for a long term are jobs where you’re physically skilled and plumbing is one of this kind of job”.
