Nigeria’s Vice-President Kashim Shettima has apologised over a comment he made in the heat of his lobbying for Senator Godswill Akpabio to take the senate presidency.
Akpabio, a Catholic from Akwa Ibom was in a hot contest with Abdulaziz Yari – a Sunni Muslim from Zamfara for the position.
Shettima was said to have quipped to some colleagues that the most incompetent southern Christian is better than the most puritanical northern Muslim.
The comment was received in bad taste by Muslims although the statement was surprising to Christians many of who see and consider him an Islamic fundamentalist.
For whatever it is worth, Shettime tried damage control when he granted an interview with BBC Hausa, saying his comments were not intended to discredit adherents of his faith.
“I am human and imperfect”, he said, “so I am asking for the forgiveness of the community and my God”.
