Industrial Court For The Second Time Block Labour Unions From Planned Workers’ Strike

The Nigeria labour unions’ threat to embark on a strike has again been shut down by the National Industrial Court this Monday.

The court said its order of June 5 restraining Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) from embarking on industrial action subsists pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice.

Trial judge Olufunke Anuwe adjourned the matter to July 20.

The unions are trying to pressure the government to rescind its decision to withdraw petrol subsidies which have sent transportation costs spiralling upwards and causing inflation in the economy, or otherwise implement palliatives to cushion the effect on workers and the vulnerable.

Government and unions have been locked in negotiations.

But the trend of using the courts to mute labour’s right to strikes and withdrawal of service could weaken its negotiating power in the long term.
