Obidient Movement Releases Obi’s 2014 Handover Report

The National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Yunusa Tanko, has published the 2014 handover report of former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, showing a net financial balance of ₦86.67 billion at the end of Obi’s administration.

Tanko posted the document on X on Wednesday amid an escalating dispute between Obi and the Anambra State Government over loans, debts and other financial obligations attributed to successive administrations.

Obi is the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 election.

What The Handover Document Shows

Dated March 17, 2014, the document was addressed by Obi to his successor, Willie Obiano, and summarised Anambra State’s financial position as of close of business on March 14, 2014 — the final working day of Obi’s administration.

“As Friday 14 March, 2014 was the final working day of my Administration, I also forward herewith, the summary of the full financial statement of Anambra State (copies of which are herein attached) as at close of business on that day,” Obi wrote in the covering letter to Obiano.

According to the report, local investments stood at ₦27 billion, while foreign currency investments valued at $156 million were put at ₦26.5 billion.

The document also listed certified balances belonging to the state and its Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) at ₦28.17 billion, alongside a ₦10 billion Federal Government-approved refund.

After accounting for estimated liabilities, the report recorded a net balance of ₦86,665,985,574.06.

Alongside the release, Tanko challenged other former Anambra governors to publish their own handover notes.

“Let other governors, from 1999 till date, have the courage to publish their handover notes to their successors, as Peter Obi has done. Be accountable to the people,” he said.

An Ongoing Dispute Over Anambra’s Finances

The release comes against the backdrop of renewed controversy over the state’s inherited financial obligations.

The Anambra State Government has maintained that it continues to service loans and other liabilities inherited from previous administrations, including obligations allegedly incurred during Obi’s tenure — a position the state government detailed in an earlier statement citing Debt Management Office (DMO) figures.

Obi has repeatedly rejected the allegations, insisting his administration left no outstanding salaries, pensions or gratuities, and that contractors for duly executed and certified projects were fully paid.

He has challenged anyone disputing his position to provide contrary evidence, declaring: “If anybody can establish anything to the contrary, I will stop campaigning.”

The state government has maintained its position regarding the inherited liabilities, and the dispute over Anambra’s financial records from Obi’s 2006–2014 tenure remains unresolved.

Anambra State’s governor, Charles Soludo, although of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has publicly endorsed President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), against Peter Obi.

Some analysts speculate the timing of the disputes may have been calculated to undermine the political prospects of the former governor of the state.
