Anambra First Lady Marks Women’s Equality Day with Message

The First Lady of Anambra State, Dr (Mrs) Nonye Soludo, has called for the sustained promotion of women and girls in societal affairs, saying they deserve equal opportunities to learn, lead, work, dream and thrive without limitations imposed by gender, culture, religion or social barriers.

She made the call on Wednesday in a message marking Women’s Equality Day, observed every August 26.

This year’s Women’s Equality Day carries the theme “Leading the Change: Women Shaping a Sustainable Future.”

The day commemorates the 1920 certification of the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution, which secured women’s constitutional right to vote, and has since grown into a globally observed occasion recognising progress and ongoing gaps in gender equality.

Soludo celebrated the strength, brilliance, resilience and contributions of women globally, saying equality is not about giving women an undue advantage but about ensuring every woman and girl has the chance to realise her full potential.

“Equality is not about giving women an advantage; it is about ensuring that every woman and girl has the opportunity to learn, lead, work, dream and thrive without limitations imposed by gender, culture, religion, or social impediment,” she said.

Empowering Women Strengthens Families And Communities, She Says

According to Soludo, empowering women strengthens families, promotes healthier communities and contributes to the advancement of society at large.

She called on stakeholders to continue creating an environment where every girl can envision a positive future and every woman can occupy her rightful place in society.

Soludo also celebrated women who inspire, nurture, lead and transform society, calling for continued efforts to create spaces where women’s voices are heard, their contributions valued and their potential fully realised.

She wished women a fulfilling Women’s Equality Day and encouraged wider society to sustain the promotion of inclusion and equal opportunities for all, a message that echoes similar calls made by public officials and women’s rights advocates across Nigeria on the same day.
