Aggrieved students of D.S. Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic, Itori, Ogun State, have blocked the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway in protest over the alleged killing of their colleague during a robbery attack.
The demonstration has caused heavy traffic on the busy highway, leaving motorists and commuters stranded.
It was gathered that armed men invaded a student hostel overnight, killing one student and leaving others injured.
The incident triggered a major protest on Tuesday morning at the polytechnic, located along the Wasinmi–Itori axis in Ewekoro Local Government Area of Ogun State.
The institution’s management confirmed that a final-year student was killed during the robbery attack and immediately suspended the ongoing examinations scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday.
In a statement signed by the Chairman of the Timetable, Examination and Academic Calendar Committee, Engr. Gideon O. Adekunle, the school described the incident as “unfortunate.”
“Following an unfortunate event that occurred overnight, which resulted in the loss of a student and another being critically injured during a robbery incident at Eruku, the examinations scheduled for today, Tuesday, July 28, and tomorrow, Wednesday, July 29, are hereby postponed,” the statement read.
“This is to ensure that students in the affected area are able to regain their composure and emotional stability and, most importantly, to honour the deceased. Examinations will resume on Friday, July 31, 2026, as contained in the timetable. A new schedule for the postponed examinations will be communicated in due course.”
Police Deployed as Ogun Schools Face Rising Robbery Threats
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed the ongoing protest when contacted by Daily Trust, saying operatives of the command had already been deployed to restore peace and order.
He, however, said he could not immediately confirm whether the protest was triggered by the killing of students during the robbery attack.
“What I can confirm is that there is a protest on the ground. As for the second issue, give me some time and I will get back to you,” he said.
Daily Trust reports that institutions in parts of Ogun State have repeatedly faced security threats, with several incidents resulting in the killing of students and the looting of their property.
In May, an armed robbery attack claimed the life of a student of Gateway ICT Polytechnic, Saapade, in Remo North Local Government Area of the state.
At a security summit convened to address the rising insecurity in student communities, the polytechnic’s Dean of Students’ Affairs, Adedayo Musari, lamented the persistent robbery attacks targeting students.
He said, “Between 2009 and 2026, 15 robbery cases were recorded in Ipara, with two students killed. In Isara, 32 robbery cases were recorded, leaving five students dead, while in Ode, 58 robbery cases were recorded, resulting in the deaths of 16 students.”
In April, about 12 gunmen reportedly attacked students of the College of Engineering, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ibogun campus, injuring several students and making away with mobile phones, a vehicle and other valuables.
The attackers also reportedly inflicted machete cuts on some of the students during the attack.
