Planned Outage to Hit Five States as TCN Upgrades Kumbotos Grid

Electricity customers across parts of northern Nigeria and even a corner of the Niger Republic should prepare for a power outage on Sunday, June 29, 2026.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) announced the planned disruption on Saturday through its spokesperson, Ndidi Mbah, linking it to scheduled maintenance at the Kumbotos 330 kilovolt transmission substation.

The work will temporarily take down the substation to allow TCN’s contractor to upgrade 330kV bus II jumpers and replace existing 350mm² conductors with heavier 800mm² conductors — a technical improvement designed to strengthen the transmission network and improve long-term power reliability across the region.

As a result, three distribution companies will be unable to receive and distribute power during the maintenance window: the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO), parts of the Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JEDC), and the Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC).

“Kano Electricity Distribution Company and some part of Jos Electricity Distribution Company and Yola Electricity Distribution Company will be unable to off-take power for distribution to their customers in Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa States, as well as Azare in Bauchi State, Nguru in Yobe State, and also Gazaoua in the Niger Republic,” TCN stated.

The outage reflects TCN’s ongoing drive to modernise Nigeria’s ageing high-voltage infrastructure.

Kumbotos substation serves as a critical hub for power distribution across the North-West and parts of the North-East, making its upgrade a significant step in improving grid stability in the region.

Customers in the affected areas are advised to plan accordingly and expect disruption on Sunday until the maintenance is completed.
