Nigeria’s National Examinations Council (NECO) released the results of the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) on Thursday, June 26, 2026, and simultaneously announced July 22 and 23 as the dates for a re-sit examination in Mathematics and English Studies.
Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, Azeez Sani, announced the development in an official statement.
A total of 186,291 candidates registered for the 2026 BECE, which was conducted across 12 subjects from April 20 to April 30, 2026.
The BECE is the qualifying examination for pupils completing Nigeria's nine-year basic education programme under the Universal Basic Education framework.
Passing it is the gateway to Senior Secondary School (SSS1) placement — making the results significant for hundreds of thousands of Nigerian families.
The release followed the conclusion of the 2026 BECE Award Committee Meeting at NECO’s headquarters in Minna, Niger State.
“The result of the examination was released following the successful conclusion of the 2026 BECE Award Committee Meeting held at the Council’s Headquarters in Minna, Niger State,” Sani said.
Re-sit Targets Candidates With Maths and English Gaps
The Chairperson of the Award Committee, Folake David — Director of Basic Education at the Federal Ministry of Education and representative of Minister Dr. Maruf Alausa — confirmed the re-sit schedule and explained its purpose precisely.
“The Award Committee has approved the date and time for the 2026 BECE Re-sit examination. The Re-sit examination is scheduled to hold on 22nd and 23rd July, 2026, for Mathematics and English Studies,” she said.
David clarified which candidates are eligible.
“The BECE Re-sit examination is conducted for candidates that have conditional deficiencies in Mathematics or English Studies or both,” she said.
She further explained the value of sitting the re-sit, particularly for candidates who would otherwise lose an entire academic year.
“The Re-sit examination is to enable affected candidates remedy deficiencies in Mathematics and English Studies, which allows them gain the necessary certification for admission and placement into Senior Secondary School (SSS1) without repeating a full academic year,” she added.
Candidates with conditional deficiencies in either or both subjects should confirm their eligibility with their schools and prepare for the July 22–23 window — it is their clearest path to SSS1 without delay.
