After months of leadership tension, the University of Uyo has appointed Professor Chris Nyong Ekong as its 9th substantive Vice Chancellor, ending a prolonged succession process.
Ekong, a professor of Economics and alumnus of the institution, succeeds acting VC Prof. Samuel Adewumi, who had led the university since December 2025.
The appointment was confirmed following approval by President Bola Tinubu as Visitor to the university, alongside the Federal Ministry of Education.
The transition follows the exit of the previous administration, which created a leadership gap and internal contest for the position.
Ekong formally met with Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, at the Government House in Uyo shortly after his emergence.
The governor advised the new VC to focus on unity and progress rather than revisiting past disputes.
He said, “Let me again, on behalf of the Government and people of Akwa Ibom State, congratulate you on this well-deserved appointment.”
He added, “We have implicit faith in your capacity to deliver big on your new assignment.”
Governor Calls For Stability And Progress
Governor Eno cautioned Ekong against reopening past administrative issues, urging him to concentrate on building the university’s future.
He encouraged a forward-looking approach that prioritises academic excellence and institutional growth.
He said the new VC has the experience and leadership background to reposition the university.
He said, “You have all it takes to make the University of Uyo, the Ivy-League of the Nigerian public university system.”
Ekong previously served in the Akwa Ibom State Executive Council, adding public service experience to his academic career.
The governor also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to education through bursaries and infrastructure support.
He thanked President Tinubu and Education Minister Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa for approving the appointment process.
He also acknowledged Prof. Adewumi for maintaining stability during the transition period.
University Leadership Pledges Academic Excellence
Presenting the new VC, Governing Council Chairman Dr. Muiz Banire described Ekong as a capable and experienced academic leader.
He said the appointment reflects both merit and familiarity with the institution’s needs.
Banire also praised the Akwa Ibom State Government for ongoing intervention projects within the university.
According to him, such investments are improving facilities and learning conditions.
In his response, Ekong thanked the governor and stakeholders for their support.
He pledged to uphold academic standards and justify the confidence placed in him.
He signaled readiness to work with staff and management to strengthen teaching, research, and administration.
The University of Uyo, established in 1991, remains one of Nigeria’s major federal universities, serving thousands of students across disciplines.
