A muted leadership change has taken place in Nigeria’s Senate, as Tony Nwoye emerged as the new Minority Whip.
This was confirmed during Wednesday’s plenary at the National Assembly in Abuja.
Nwoye was chosen unanimously by minority caucus members after the exit of his predecessor, Osita Ngwu.
Ngwu vacated the role after leaving the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on the same day.
The announcement was conveyed in a letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during proceedings.
Defection Sparks Senate Leadership Change
In his letter, Ngwu explained his decision to switch political alignment and join the APC.
“My decision is informed by my desire to align with Governor Peter Mbah and President Bola Tinubu.”
He described the APC as a stable platform capable of advancing his political direction.
The defection created a vacancy in the minority leadership, prompting swift action by opposition senators.
Nwoye, who represents Anambra North, stepped into the role following agreement within the minority bloc.
He was first elected to the Senate in 2023 under the Labour Party before switching to the African Democratic Congress in 2025.
PDP Crisis Deepens as Supreme Court Awaits Verdict
Meanwhile, the crisis within the PDP continues as the party awaits a very consequential Supreme Court ruling.
The dispute centres on a convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State, in November 2025, which was nullified earlier.
A five-member panel led by Justice Mohammed Garba has reserved judgment on the appeal filed by the PDP.
The court said a date for the final decision will be communicated to all parties involved.
Reacting, PDP spokesman Ini Ememobong called for calm among party members.
“Supporters should remain calm and keep their hopes alive.”
The faction aligned with Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde said it remains confident of a favourable outcome.
The ruling is expected to shape the party’s internal structure ahead of future elections.
