Two chemicals commonly used to make plastics more flexible have been linked to nearly 2 million premature births and approximately 74,000 newborn deaths worldwide in 2018.
A new study confirms that these substances—di-2-ethylhexylphthalate (DEHP) and diisononyl phthalate (DiNP)—pose a severe threat to maternal and infant health.
Consequently, researchers are calling for immediate global intervention. The findings show that babies born before 37 weeks of pregnancy face lifelong complications.
According to CNN Health, survivors of premature birth often suffer from breathing problems, developmental delays, and immune-related issues.
“Even small disruptions in hormones can have significant biological effects,” Leonardo Trasande, a senior author of the study, stated while explaining the findings.
The chemicals belong to a class known as phthalates. These are often described as “everywhere chemicals” due to their presence in food packaging, toys, and medical equipment.
Placental Dysfunction And The Endocrine Threat
Scientists believe these chemicals contribute to preterm births by disrupting the function of the placenta. This organ is vital for supplying oxygen and nutrients to a fetus.
Furthermore, phthalates are known to interfere with the endocrine system. This process disrupts the body’s hormone balance, which is critical for a healthy pregnancy term.
“The chemicals are known to disrupt the body’s hormone system, a process referred to as endocrine system interference,” the study authors alleged in their report.
Horizontal information shows that phthalates are not chemically bound to the plastics they soften. This allows them to leach easily into food, water, and the air we breathe.
Past research has already connected these toxins to obesity, asthma, and cardiovascular disease. Meanwhile, a 2021 study suggested they contribute to thousands of adult deaths annually.
The latest data, published in the journal eClinicalMedicine, analyzed 200 countries. It found that Africa and South Asia bear the heaviest burden of these health outcomes.
Regulations Needed Beyond Individual Safety Efforts
While these chemicals leave the human body relatively quickly, constant exposure makes avoidance difficult for the average consumer.
Experts recommend using products labeled “phthalate-free” and avoiding the use of plastic containers in microwaves. Furthermore, regular cleaning can reduce contaminated dust in homes.
“Individual efforts alone are not enough,” the research team stated. They argued that the scale of the problem requires a shift in industrial manufacturing and environmental oversight.
The study found that rising plastic use in developing regions has accelerated the health crisis. Consequently, stronger regulations are required to force safer product designs.
Although the findings do not prove a direct cause-and-effect relationship, the statistical correlation is significant. It adds to a growing body of evidence against synthetic additives.
The administration of environmental policies must now address the “Everywhere Chemicals” to protect the next generation. However, the global plastic industry continues to expand.
