Naira Strengthens Against Dollar All Week at Official Market

The Naira posted a notable week-on-week gain against the United States Dollar at the official foreign exchange market.

Data from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) revealed that between January 9 and 16, 2026, the local currency strengthened by ₦5.22 against the dollar.

It closed at ₦1,417.95/$1 on Friday, marking a 0.37% appreciation from the ₦1,423.17/$1 recorded the previous week.

Throughout the week, the Naira recorded four consecutive gains, with only a single day of decline on Wednesday.

In contrast, the parallel (black) market remained stable, with the Naira trading at ₦1,490/$1 during the review period.

The upward trend in the official FX market coincided with a steady rise in Nigeria’s external reserves.

Figures showed an increase of $0.19 billion (0.42%), bringing reserves to $45.86 billion as of Thursday, January 15, 2026, compared to $45.67 billion the previous Friday.
