Benin Rep Extends Term for Presidency, Creates Senate Ahead of 2026 Election

Benin’s parliament has approved a sweeping constitutional reform that extends presidential and legislative terms from five to seven years, while also creating a new legislative chamber, the Senate.

The measure passed with strong backing in the National Assembly, signaling a major shift in the country’s political landscape.

President Patrice Talon, who will have spent ten years in office by the end of his current term, could soon step into a role as a senator, giving him continued influence over national affairs.

The new Senate is expected to have between 25 and 30 members, including former heads of state and other figures appointed by the president.

Talon’s ally, Finance Minister Romuald Wadagni, is widely seen as the frontrunner to succeed him, after the main opposition candidate was reportedly blocked from running.

The reform has drawn both praise and criticism. Supporters say it strengthens governance and introduces a check on the lower house, while critics warn the Senate could serve as a vehicle for Talon’s continued influence.

The amendment will take effect only after approval by the Constitutional Court and will be implemented for the next electoral cycle in 2026.

While extending terms and creating a second chamber may bring new stability, the timing and political context have raised concerns about fairness and democratic balance.

The move comes just months before a pivotal election, and the country now watches closely to see how the Senate will shape Benin’s future.
