ghana/">Ghana has agreed to accept West African nationals deported from the United States. President John Dramani Mahama confirmed that the first group of 14 arrived on Wednesday.

The deportees, mostly Nigerians and one Gambian, were processed in Ghana before being sent back to their home countries. Mahama told reporters this was done under existing regional travel protocols.

“We were approached by the US to accept third-party nationals who were being removed from the US, and we agreed that West African nationals were acceptable because all our fellow West Africans don’t need a visa to come to our country,” he explained.

Trump’s Immigration Agenda

The deal follows a request from Washington as part of President Donald Trump’s canada-41504523">immigration crackdown. His administration has pushed African countries to accept deportees more quickly.

Similar arrangements have been made with other nations. Recently, five people were deported to Eswatini, eight to South Sudan, and seven to Rwanda. Rwanda has even agreed to take up to 250 deportees.

In July, Trump hosted five West African presidents in Washington, where the issue featured prominently. Mahama was not present at that meeting.

But there are divided opinions, with some warning that returnees are at risk. They argue that deported migrants face stigma, joblessness, and security threats upon return.

So, in your opinion, should African governments push back harder on US deportation pressure?
