Abduljabar Adama, Nigeria’s teenage swimming prodigy, has written his name in gold—well, silver—on the global stage.
The 17-year-old clinched a silver medal in the men’s 50m butterfly at the World Junior Swimming Championships in Otopeni, romania/">Romania.
He clocked 23.64 seconds, just 0.10 seconds behind Great Britain’s Dean Fearn, who won gold with 23.54 seconds.
“Abduljabar Adama’s silver medal is a proud moment for Nigeria and for Africa,” said NSC Director General, Hon. Bukola Olopade.
“His hard work and talent have once again demonstrated that our athletes can stand shoulder to shoulder with the best in the world.”
From Ilorin to the World Stage
Adama didn’t just show up—he dominated. In the heats, he posted 23.61 seconds, the second-fastest time out of 116 swimmers.
He went faster in the semifinals, winning his race with 23.48 seconds—a new national record.
This feat makes him the first Nigerian swimmer to ever win a medal at a World Aquatics event.
“Moments like this serve as a reminder to us at the NSC to remain committed to providing the support and structure needed to nurture such talents,” Olopade added.
Adama’s journey began in Ilorin, Kwara State. He trained in London before heading to Romania with Team Nigeria.
Earlier in March, he stunned Africa at the 16th Africa Junior Swimming Championships in Cairo, Egypt.
He won three gold medals, one bronze, and broke multiple records—including a new African Junior record in the 50m freestyle.
Olympic Dreams and Rising Expectations
Adama’s performance has sparked talk of Olympic potential. With the Los Angeles 2028 Games on the horizon, many believe he could be Nigeria’s first Olympic swimming medalist.
He currently studies at Mount Kelly College in the UK, a school known for producing elite swimmers.
Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq also congratulated him, saying, “We are confident that this is just the start of a career that is destined for the highest honour attainable.”
