Ademola Lookman Finally Returns to Atalanta After Transfer Row

Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman has returned to Atalanta training in Bergamo after days of absence caused by a transfer standoff.

The 27-year-old winger, fresh from a strong season, had skipped training without permission. He wanted to push through a move to Italian giants Inter Milan.

In a dramatic twist, Lookman released a personal statement where he accused Atalanta of betrayal. “The club broke promises and treated me unfairly as both a human being and a professional footballer,” he wrote.

Inter Milan had been keen to bring the Super Eagles attacker to the San Siro. But talks collapsed when Atalanta refused to lower their stance.

Atalanta’s CEO, Luca Percassi, later admitted there was an “understanding” that Lookman could leave under certain conditions. However, he explained that it only applied to “big clubs outside Serie A.”

That clause effectively ruled out Inter, even though the Milan club had opened negotiations. With the deal blocked, Inter have now withdrawn interest.

Lookman’s Next Steps in Bergamo

On Tuesday, Lookman returned to training, accompanied by his father and a close friend. His presence eased tension at the training ground, but questions remain about his future.

The club is considering disciplinary measures for his absence. Italian outlet Sky Sport reported that Atalanta will handle the issue internally before the Serie A season begins.

Lookman has been one of Atalanta’s key performers. Last season, he scored vital goals in the UEFA Europa League, including a historic hat-trick in the final against Bayer Leverkusen.

Despite the standoff, the Bergamo side will hope to keep him focused as they launch their new campaign. They face newly-promoted Pisa at home on Sunday evening.

For context, Italian football has often seen such disputes. From Carlos Tevez at Juventus to Mauro Icardi at Inter, transfer wrangles are not uncommon in Serie A.
