“Is Your God Weak”? Odinkalu Mocks Wike for Entering Church With Heavy Security

In Nigeria, even God needs police backup—at least according to the security drama that followed Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, into church on Sunday.

Professor Chidi Odinkalu, human rights activist and professional thorn in the flesh of politicians, could not resist.

He posted a photo of Wike on X (formerly Twitter), walking into service like a governor-general of insecurity, surrounded by enough armed escorts to start a small battalion.

Odinkalu didn’t sugarcoat it. He wrote: “…these people who go inside church with a retinue of security protection, like God is too weak to protect them even when they are too inebriated to stay awake in church?”

Of course, Nigerians online quickly picked sides. Some laughed at the irony. Others asked what exactly Wike is afraid of—assassins or demons? After all, if even a Sunday morning service requires rifles and bulletproof SUVs, what chance do ordinary Nigerians stand on the streets?

Security for Politicians, Fear for Citizens

The post hit a nerve because it reflects a growing truth. Nigeria is sliding deeper into insecurity, yet those in power insulate themselves with endless convoys, while the citizens face kidnappers, bandits, and thieves without so much as functioning streetlights.

The church, once seen as a refuge, has now become another theatre for the absurd—where politicians parade their fears under the watch of men with guns. Should we laugh, cry, or just clap for the comedy?

What do you think: was Wike’s display unnecessary overkill or simply smart survival in today’s Nigeria? Drop your thoughts in the comments.
