The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has lost seven lawmakers — four senators and three members of the House of Representatives — to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The wave of defections was officially recorded on Wednesday during plenary sessions in both chambers of the National Assembly.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio read the letters from the senators and directed the Clerk to document the move.
The senators — Francis Fadahunsi (Osun East), Oluwole Olubiyi (Osun Central), Aniekan Bassey (Akwa Ibom North East), and Samson Ekong (Akwa Ibom South) — all blamed their exit on what they described as “irreconcilable differences” within the PDP.
APC Tightens Grip on Senate
With the latest development, the APC now controls 70 of the 109 Senate seats.
The PDP has dropped to 28, while the Labour Party holds 5 seats. The SDP has 2, and NNPP and APGA have one each.
Observers see this as a significant blow to the PDP’s relevance in the Senate.
The defection ceremony turned political celebration when APC National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru, showed up at the Red Chamber.
He was joined by former Labour Minister, Senator Chris Ngige, and several APC lawmakers from the House of Reps.
“This is a sign of greater things to come for the APC,” one of the senators was overheard saying after the plenary.
Three PDP Reps Also Cross Over
In a similar move, three PDP members of the House of Representatives also switched sides.
They are Taofeek Ajilesoro (Ife Federal Constituency, Osun), Omirin Olusanya (Atakunmosa/Ilesha, Osun), and Marcus Onobun (Esan Central/West/Igueben, Edo).
Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, read their letters aloud during plenary and welcomed them into the APC fold.
The defections reduce the PDP’s numbers in the Green Chamber and deepen internal cracks ahead of the 2027 elections.
For many, the timing of these defections is raising questions.
