It may look like it is straight out of science fiction, but this is real.
China has unveiled Agent Hospital, the world’s first fully Artificial Intelligence-powered medical facility. Developed by Tsinghua University’s Institute for AI Industry Research.
The virtual hospital is staffed entirely by 42 AI doctors and 4 AI nurses.
The hospital operates without human medical staff. It can simulate over 10,000 patient visits in just a few days, diagnosing and treating more than 300 conditions across 21 departments like cardiology, pediatrics, and neurology.
“Agent Hospital redefines medical diagnostics and treatment, offering unmatched efficiency,” said Liu Yan, lead researcher at Tsinghua AIR.
AI Doctors Achieve Human-Level Accuracy
The AI system scored a 93.06% accuracy rate on the MedQA dataset, which is based on the US Medical Licensing Exam. This performance matches or exceeds that of human doctors.
The hospital simulates full clinical workflows—from triage and diagnosis to treatment and follow-up. It also serves as a training ground for medical students, offering real-time feedback in a risk-free environment.

China plans to export the model to countries with limited healthcare access. The system could help reduce doctor shortages and improve care in underserved regions like rural Nigeria.
However, experts caution that AI must complement—not replace—human judgment. Ethical oversight and regulatory compliance remain key concerns.
