UK Hosts Conference to Address Sudan’s Ongoing Crisis

On the second anniversary of Sudan’s civil war, the United Kingdom hosted a one-day conference in London, co-organized with France, Germany, the European Union, and the African Union, aiming to chart a path to alleviate suffering in Sudan.

UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy said there was a need for political coherence, though the conference excluded Sudanese factions and members of civil society.

The event sought to establish an African Union-led international contact group and push for unrestricted humanitarian aid flow.

The war, which started in April 2023 in a power struggle between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths, 13 million displaced, and widespread famine.

Despite accusations of external actors like the UAE supplying arms—allegations it denies—diplomatic discussions proceeded cautiously. The UAE and Germany pledged humanitarian aid, with the UK also contributing £120 million.

Human rights advocates have asked for stronger international action to address violations and prevent further atrocities, particularly in Darfur.

There is growing concerns about the potential partition of Sudan and the effectiveness of global response, compounded by recent U.S. aid cuts.
