In a surprising decision, the Nigerian House of Representatives has backed President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State.
Lawmakers also endorsed the six-month suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and all elected assembly members.
On Thursday, lawmakers debated the emergency declaration. There were initial doubts if the president’s minders could garner the two-thirds majority required to approve the decision.
A member requested a head count to confirm attendance. However, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas ruled that the attendance register would be used instead.
“I want the house to note that today’s plenary is being attended by 243 members based on our attendance register,” Abbas said. “Just for the record, we’ve more than satisfied the requirement for this particular amendment.”

The National Assembly also imposed a joint committee of both chambers to oversee the administration of affairs in Rivers State during the emergency period, as required by the constitution. It required the Sole Administrator to report to it, and not the Federal Executive Council (FEC) as earlier gazetted.
Divided Opinions on the Suspension
The House approval has been met with disbelief and debate across political circles. Critics argue that suspending a sitting governor and lawmakers lacks clear constitutional backing. “Nowhere in the 1999 Constitution does it allow the suspension of an elected governor like this,” one lawmaker insisted.
Supporters of the decision say it was necessary to stabilize Rivers amid a deepening political crisis. “The state has been in chaos for too long. This is the best way to restore order,” a ruling party member insisted.
The House has now adjourned until next Tuesday, leaving the fate of Rivers State hanging.
All eyes are now on the Senate which must constitutionally approve the President’s proclamation for it to stand. The Senate is also seating today.
