Peter Obi Slams Nigeria’s Political Elites For Focusing On Trivialities While The Masses Suffer

Anambra State‘s former governor, Peter Obi, has criticized Nigeria’s political leadership, calling it “embarrassing” and “concerning.”

“Too much attention on frivolities as poverty deepens is concerning. It is deeply troubling that Nigeria’s political leadership is rapidly descending into an embarrassing spectacle,” he wrote on X.

Obi lamented the nation’s misplaced priorities, stating, “We are at a time when our nation faces the highest levels of actual and multidimensional poverty, soaring infant mortality rates, millions of out-of-school children, one of the most insecure and hunger-stricken nations on earth, grappling with escalating insecurity and countless other challenges.“

Misplaced Priorities

The former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, who came third in the 2023 presidential elections, may have been referencing the sexual harassment scandal involving the Senate President and a female legislator.

Obi worried that national discourse has been allowed to be dominated by “trivialities” such as allegations of sexual harassment and budget padding in the National Assembly, while recent judicial rulings could be a threat to Nigeria’s nascent democracy.

Criticizing all three arms of government, Obi remarked, “What is coming out of the three arms of government, the Executive, the Legislature and the Judiciary is disgusting and uninspiring.“

He urged leaders to avoid disruptive interference in sub-national governance, warning that “reckless neglect of serious governance is a grave disservice to millions of Nigerians.”

Obi further condemned the culture of political defections, describing it as a tactic for “rigging politicians into office.”

“Nigeria cannot afford to be governed like a reality TV show while millions suffer for so long,” he insisted.

Calling for leadership based on “character, competence, capacity, and compassion,” Obi stressed that failure to prioritize education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation “undermines the present and betrays the nation’s future.“

“It is time for leadership rooted in character, competence, capacity, consistency, compassion, and urgency—leadership that prioritizes education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation,” he said.
