Turkey Plans to Limit Social Media Use for Minors Amid Global Trend

A growing trend is emerging to restrict children’s access to social media, with Turkey preparing to follow Australia’s recent ban.

Turkey plans to limit social media use for children under 13. The Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK) intends to stop these young users from accessing social media platforms.

Abdulkerim Gun, the Deputy Chair of BTK, shared the plan with the Turkish Parliament’s Peer Bullying Sub-Commission on Thursday. He said, “We are working on changes to restrict social media access for children under 13, including middle school students.”

Gun mentioned that other countries already have similar rules. For example, Florida restricts children under 13, and Australia restricts children up to 16 unless supervised by an adult family member.

These restrictions aim to protect minors from cyberbullying, misinformation, and harmful content. This proposal is part of Turkey’s more extensive efforts to regulate digital spaces, which has sparked debate.

However, critics express concerns that these restrictions might limit free expression and access to information. Human rights groups warn that such measures could increase government control over digital platforms and silence independent voices.

Although there is no set date for implementation, the discussion continues in Turkish society.
