The Nigerian Bureau of Statistics (NBS) latest report for July in the transport sector of the Nigerian economy shows that domestic airfares rose by 25% YoY from ₦78.775.74 in July 2023 to ₦98,561.74 in July 2024.
The average fare paid by air passengers for specified routes for a single journey was ₦98,561.74, a 9.65% increase compared to the previous month of June 2024. The increase comes after the federal government announced plans to raise tax charges amid complaints from Airline Operators of Nigeria over multiple taxations.
On a more positive note, land transportation by bus, motorcycle, and waterway journeys saw a decline in fares in July 2024. The average fare paid by commuters for bus journeys within a city per drop decreased by 2.18% from ₦963.58 in June 2024 to ₦942.61 in July 2024, and a 29.46% decline from ₦1,336.29 in July 2023. The average fare paid for intercity bus journeys per drop was ₦7,117.17 in July 2024, a slight increase of 0.35% compared to ₦7,092.03 in June 2024.
On state profile analysis, the highest fare was recorded in Anambra at ₦9,566.89, followed by Gombe at ₦8,299.44. The lowest fare was recorded in Kwara at ₦5,518.38, followed by Ebonyi at ₦5,596.11. Taraba state recorded the highest number of bus journeys within the city at ₦1,457.28 and Ondo at ₦1,200.94.
