The Nigerian government has formed a 15-member National Task Force Committee for Cervical Cancer Elimination (NTF-CCE) to lead its campaign against cervical cancer

The initiative aims to screen 50% of eligible women at least once in their lifetime and treat 100% of detected precancerous lesions by 2027.

The Task Force will provide expert guidance, mobilize resources, and lead a nationwide effort to reduce the impact of cervical cancer in Nigeria.

The formation of this committee is crucial to achieving the ambitious goals outlined in the National Strategic Plan for Control of Cervical Cancer 2023-2027. The committee will also develop and implement training for public and private healthcare providers in cervical cancer screening and treatment in six geo-political zones.

It will also execute communication strategies to educate women and communities about cervical cancer and establish partnerships with community leaders and influencers to promote screening and treatment uptake.

The committee will submit quarterly reports on progress, challenges, and achievements through the Director General of the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRAT).

The committee will be chaired by former Health Minister Prof. Isaac Adewole, with Zainab Shinkafi Bagudu as Vice Chairman and Prof. Sani Malami as Secretary.

Cervical cancer is a growth of cells that starts in the cervix. The cervix is the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina. Various strains of the human papillomavirus, also called HPV, play a role in causing most cervical cancers. HPV is a common infection that’s passed through sexual contact.
