U.S. former President Donald Trump has been indicted by a Manhattan grand jury, according to several reports. Trump could be arranged in court as early as next week for criminal prosecution.
Trump is under investigation by New York’s District Attorney, Alvin Bragg for alleged involvement in hush money payment schemes and cover-ups that involved Stormy Daniels, the adult movie star.
The indictment will be the first of any former or current U.S. presidents in history.
The ex-President’s response was characteristically prompt and blistering calling his ordeal a “political persecution and election interference at the highest level in history”.
“The American people realize exactly what the Radical Left Democrats are doing here. Everyone can see it. So our Movement and our Party – united and strong – will first defeat Alvin Bragg, and then we will defeat Joe Biden, and we are going to throw every last one of these Crooked Democrats out of office so we can MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”, Trump said.
Trump is staging a presidential comeback in 2024 after losing his re-election bid to President Biden in 2016.
Many of Trump’s GOP compatriots agreed with him. Sen Ted Cruz of Texas tweeted saying the indictment was “a catastrophic escalation in the weaponization of the justice system”.
However, the announcement appears to have provoked wild jubilations among left-leaning Americans with ##IndictmentDay trending on U.S. social media.
Mr Trump is the only U.S. president to ever been impeached twice by the House but he managed to avoid being removed from office by the Senate.
Last year, the Trump Organization was convicted on several charges of tax fraud, though Trump was not personally charged.
